My next major tour was D:ream, who I was with for 2 years. I’d only been in the band two weeks when we went to Australia, performing at Sydney sleaze ball dressed in sailor’s uniforms! Everything was a mad whirlwind of TV’s, promotion, roadshows and tours but we were a very close-knit band. Meeting Take That (I was a fan!) was a highlight, but also meeting my hero Richard Attenborough at the Labour party conference was fantastic. Doing the Festival Hall in 1997 when Labour won the election was amazing too. Also exposing Peter on ‘Dish the Dirt’ on the Big Breakfast was fun-for me anyway! He took it well though.

I then had a single out, Brilliant Feeling (Arista), which was a moderate hit in Australia, and on the back of this and my stint in D:ream, I was asked to front a Huddersfield based band ‘Shiva’. I’ll never forget having a bad gig at a club up North (which I won’t mention), storming out and screaming at the tour manager outside because everything was going wrong. Little did I know he had my radio mic with him and forgot to switch it off. Everybody in the club heard what I was saying and needless to say the atmosphere wasn’t great. I had a fabulous time with ‘Shiva’ on the Northern Exposure tour, at Tribal Gathering and at the Phoenix festival. Around this time I also worked with genius songwriter Eliot Kennedy (Spice girls / Boyzone / Five) all this inspired me to front my own project again.

After this came ABC, Martyn Fry is such a lovely guy, and then I did a few gigs and TV’s with Lisa Stansfield - going to Hong Kong with her was a highlight because it was after the handover, and America was fun, playing at the House of Blues in LA. continued
